May 14, 2015 by Sunny Fit Life

Homemade beauty and hygiene recipes are gaining popularity, and for good reason. Not only can making your own personal care products save you money, they can also help you avoid a host of harmful chemicals and toxins that are found in many beauty and hygiene products. In this article, I will show you how to make natural toothpaste. In addition, I will discuss some of the dangers you will avoid by using homemade toothpaste.

COCONUT OIL TOOTHPASTE - How to make natural toothpaste

Coconut Oil Toothpaste: How to Make Natural Toothpaste

This DIY natural coconut oil toothpaste recipe requires just a few simple steps and includes ingredients you may already have sitting in your kitchen cupboards or tucked away on your bathroom shelf. This article is for you if you’ve ever wondered how to make natural toothpaste!

Is Toothpaste Bad For You?

It is no secret that toothpaste contains many harmful chemicals and toxins that can be dangerous for you and your family. However, this article will focus on one of conventional toothpaste’s primary offenders: fluoride. This controversial substance is widely accepted in today’s world for its supposed prevention against dental caries, but do the benefits of fluoride (if this substance truly has any benefits at all) outweigh the harm that it may be wreaking in our bodies?

According to the Fluoride Action Network, one risk associated with fluoride use is dental fluorosis. This condition is characterized by white and brown splotches on the teeth and the deterioration of tooth enamel. People, primarily children, who ingest too much fluoride, sometimes experience the effects of dental fluorosis. Not only is fluoride found in most conventional toothpastes, but it is also found in many water supplies. The combination of using conventional fluoride toothpaste, along with ingesting fluoridated water, makes for a “perfect storm” for consuming large amounts of fluoride. Children are especially at risk for ingesting excess amounts of fluoride, and toothpaste manufacturers are aware of this. The Fluoride Action Network states that “In 1997, the FDA ordered toothpaste manufacturers to add a poison warning on all fluoride toothpastes sold in the U.S. The warning reads: ‘Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek professional help or contact a poison control center immediately.’” (1) Acute fluoride poisoning can manifest in various ways including gastric pain and discomfort, vomiting, headache, and diarrhea (2). Less severe forms of fluoride reactions include skin rashes and acne.

Fluoride is just one of the chemicals that are found in conventional tubes of toothpaste and its effects can be detrimental to your health. The good news is that there is a natural and economical way to achieve optimal dental health without the nasty chemicals. This recipe for natural coconut oil toothpaste combines just a few pure ingredients to create a natural coconut oil toothpaste that will clean and nourish your teeth and gums.

How to Make Natural Toothpaste with Healthy Ingredients

Coconut oil provides the base for this recipe and supplies this toothpaste with anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. When purchasing coconut oil, be sure to look for a brand that is organic, unrefined, and cold-pressed as it will afford you the most benefits. Click here to view the brand I recommend.

Baking soda is another natural ingredient that gives this natural coconut oil toothpaste an abrasive, yet gentle quality. When mixing up your toothpaste, be sure that the paste is more liquid than paste to ensure that the baking soda will not harm the enamel on your teeth. The proportion of liquids to solids in the recipe should allow for a good mixture, but add a little more coconut oil to the toothpaste if you find that it is too thick.

Peppermint essential oil adds a fresh taste to this natural coconut oil toothpaste and a few drops of stevia adds a bit of sweetness. When using essential oils, be sure to use high-quality therapeutic grade oils. There are lots of essential oils on the market, many of which contain fillers and toxic ingredients. Click here to view my favorite trusted oils.

After mixing up your toothpaste, store it in a glass jar that’s easily accessible. Please note that, depending on the temperature, you toothpaste with either be liquid or solid due to the coconut oil base.

Where to Buy Quality Essential Oils

When using essential oils, it is very important that you choose quality oils from a reputable source. Many essential oils on the market contain large amounts of cheap filler oils. Some even contain toxic ingredients. That’s why I choose to use Doterra brand essential oils. Doterra essential oils are pure and beyond organic.
